Plymouth a Jamestown: První úspěšné anglické kolonie?

Abstract

The thesis deals with the comparison of the two most important American colonies, Jamestown in Virginia and Plymouth in Massachusetts. Both colonies are primarily connected by their important primacy in the early settlement of what is now the United States. The main topic of the thesis is the comparison of the political structure of both colonies and the examination of detailed social and economic development throughout the 17th century. The thesis also focuses on key figures who had significant impact on the life and development of the colonies. The final goal is to find common features of the compared colonies and determine the main elements that influenced the successful establishment and functioning of the colonies, as well as their formal demise. Práce se zabývá srovnáním dvou nejvýznamnějších amerických kolonií Jamestown ve Virginii a Plymouth v Massachusetts. Obě kolonie spojuje především důležité prvenství v raném osídlování dnešních Spojených států. Hlavním tématem práce je komparace politické struktury obou kolonií a zkoumání podrobného sociálního a hospodářského vývoje v průběhu celého 17. století. Dále se práce věnuje klíčovým osobnostem, které měly na život a vývoj v koloniích podstatný význam. Závěrečným cílem je nalezení společných rysů porovnávaných kolonií a stanovení hlavních prvků, které měly vliv na úspěšné vybudování a fungování kolonií, i na jejich formální zánik.
