Neighbourhood Residential Changes of the Prague Inner City: Trajectories and Consequences

Abstract

1 Abstract The dissertation examines neighbourhood residential changes within Prague's inner city. Despite extensive research on inner-city transformations in Central and Eastern Europe, comprehensive analyses of inner-city neighbourhood change remain notably scarce. This thesis thus addresses this gap by analysing the evolving inner differentiation of the Prague inner city and its neighbourhoods over time and across various spatial levels. Specifically, the research investigates shifts in socio-spatial patterns, identifies occurring neighbourhood change processes and their driving forces, and explores their consequences, including impacts on the daily lives of long-term residents. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining diverse data sources and quantitative and qualitative research methods. The dissertation contributes to empirical and conceptual debates concerning inner-city neighbourhood change and gentrification in post- socialist countries, the outcomes of such changes, and the complex relationship between gentrification and other neighbourhood change processes.

1 Abstrakt Disertační práce se zabývá rezidenčními proměnami vnitřního města Prahy. Přestože transformacím vnitřních měst ve střední a východní Evropě byla věnována rozsáhlá výzkumná pozornost, komplexní analýzy změn vnitroměstských čtvrtí spíše chybějí. Tato práce se proto snaží vyplnit tuto mezeru v poznání analýzou měnící se vnitřní diferenciace vnitřního města Prahy a jeho čtvrtí v čase a napříč různými prostorovými úrovněmi. Konkrétně se výzkum zaměřuje na změny sociálně prostorových vzorců, identifikuje probíhající procesy proměn čtvrtí a jejich možné příčiny, a zkoumá jejich důsledky včetně dopadů na každodenní život dlouhodobých obyvatel. Práce kombinuje různé datové zdroje a kvantitativní i kvalitativní výzkumné metody. Disertační práce přispívá k empirickým a konceptuálním debatám, které se týkají proměn vnitroměstských čtvrtí a procesu gentrifikace v postsocialistických zemích, důsledků těchto proměn, a komplexních vztahů mezi gentrifikací a dalšími rezidenčními proměnami městských čtvrtí.
