Naproti tomu UTB mohou poskytovat přesnější obraz o míře daňové nejistoty a agresivity firemního daňového plánování. Ve své analýze využíváme panelová data amerických firem z let 2015 až 2023 a replikujeme a rozšiřujeme zjištění studie Dyreng et al. (2019) s využitím metody iterativně vážených nejmenších čtverců (IRLS) a kvantilové regrese. To...
This thesis evaluates the role of Unrecognized Tax Benefits (UTBs) as a proxy for corporate tax avoidance and investigates how this relationship changed following the 2017 U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA). While traditional tax avoidance proxies such as effective tax rates (ETRs) and book-tax differences have known limitations, UTBs offer a potentially more direct measure of tax-related uncertainty and aggressiveness. We use a panel of U.S. firms from 2015 to 2023 to replicate and extend the findings of Dyreng et al. (2019), applying Iteratively Reweighted Least Squares (IRLS) and quantile regression. Our results show that the positive association between tax avoidance and UTBs has weakened in the post-TCJA period and is concentrated among firms with high UTB levels. To identify the causal effects of the TCJA, we implement a quantile difference-in-differences (DiD) approach using treatment groups based on tax haven exposure, high UTB levels, and low ETRs. We find that the TCJA significantly reduced UTBs, particularly among firms with aggressive pre-reform tax behavior, suggesting a decline in tax uncertainty. However, the effect is not uniform and is concentrated in the upper quantiles of the UTB distribution. These findings highlight the limitations of UTBs as a one-size-fits-all proxy for tax...
