The poetic form of Sylvia Plath's early poems

Abstract

Anotace: Tato práce se zabývá analýzou vybrané rané poezie Sylvie Plath na základě období, ve kterém se básnířka často spoléhala na tradiční formy a byla inspirována mnoha básnickými vlivy. Počáteční poezie Sylvie Plath se vyznačuje experimentální fází, ze které se vyvinula zralá, mocná poezie s řízeným rytmem. V úvodní kapitole se zabýváme objasněním hlavních básnických forem, které Plath opakovaně používá, a které budeme analyzovat na příkladech několika básní, jež Plath napsala ve svých raných dvacátých letech, včetně básní ze sbírky The Colossus. Pozdější básně, které zde budou analyzovány, projevují úsilí pro volnější strukturu a pružnost. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena na analýzu různých poetických vlivů. Plath byla značně inspirována jak svými předchůdci, tak i současníky, což dokládá její použití různých básnických prostředků, dikce a dokonce i témat. V její rané tvorbě můžeme pozorovat pečlivé cvičení a učení se různým tradičním formám poezie - např. aliteračnímu verši staré anglické poezie. Tyto tradiční básnické formy musí být přezkoumány s cílem prokázat význam této praxe, která později vedla k poezii vysokého pokroku. This thesis is concerned with an analysis of selected early poetry of Sylvia Plath on the basis of the apprentice period, in which she often relied on traditional verse forms and was inspired by poetic influences. Plath's poetry is marked by a progress from experimental phase to mature, powerful poetry of controlled rhythm. In the introductory chapter, we are concerned with an elucidation of the major verse forms Plath employed repeatedly exemplified by several poems Plath wrote in her early twenties including the poems of The Colossus. The later poems discussed display an effort for a freer structure and flexibility. The second chapter focuses on the analysis of various poetic influences. Plath was immensely inspired by both her predecessors and contemporaries, which can be seen in her employment of poetic devices, diction and even themes. Plath's apparent meticulous practice and learning of the diverse traditional verse forms - for example the alliterative meter of Old English poetry - shall be examined in order to demonstrate the importance of this practice which later led to the poetry of high technical achievement.
