Heterogeneous agent models (HAMs) provide a structural account of the styl- ized facts of financial returns by populating the market with behaviourally dis- tinct trader types, but their empirical applications have largely been confined to mature equity and foreign-exchange markets. This thesis estimates four bench- mark HAMs - Brock and Hommes (1998), Farmer and Joshi (2002), Alfarano, Lux and Wagner (2008), and Franke and Westerhoff (2012) - on the S&P 500 index, Bitcoin, and Ethereum by simulated method of moments using a com- mon seventeen-moment set, with bootstrap-based Wald tests for parameter equality between equity and cryptocurrency markets and for structural breaks around the 2024 introduction of spot cryptocurrency ETFs. The cross-model comparison identifies the Franke and Westerhoff specification as the dominant model on all three markets, ranking at or near the top on both moment- level fit and stability across Monte Carlo simulations. The cross-market pa- rameter comparison returns an asymmetric verdict on the two cryptocurren- cies: Bitcoin parameters are statistically indistinguishable from those of the S&P 500, although the result is sensitive to the business-day data alignment, while Ethereum exhibits a robust behavioural divergence in the switching chan- nel, with a stronger...
