Překlad vybraných pasáží románu Guye Gunaratneho In Our Mad and Furious City s úvodní studií o autorovi, stylu románu a vybraných problémech překladu

Abstract

The following thesis presents a translation of selected passages from Guy Gunaratne's novel In Our Mad And Furious City. The introduction presents the author, his other works, and the plot of the novel. It then focuses in more detail on the stylistic features of the work in terms of stylistic and poetic devices, as well as on its lexical specifics, particularly in relation to the fact that the novel contains lexical elements of Multicultural London English, Jamaican English, Irish dialect, Urdu, and Arabic. The thesis also introduces the novel in the context of British literature. It compares Gunaratne's novel with works that share the same setting and, in some cases, the same specific colloquial language and themes of religious and political extremism. The thesis continues with a translation of selected excerpts from the novel In Our Mad And Furious City, followed by a short study on the role of colloquial language and dialects in Czech literature and on the history of translation of these phenomena. Furthermore, the thesis presents the translation method used for the translation of excerpts from Gunaratne's novel, defines the main translation problems at the pragmatic, lexical, stylistic, syntactic, and morphological levels, and provides examples of their solutions.

Následující diplomová práce přináší překlad vybraných úseků románu Guye Gunaratneho In Our Mad And Furious City. V úvodu představuje osobnost autora, jeho další tvorbu a děj románu. Dále se podrobněji zaměřuje na stylistické vlastnosti díla z hlediska stylistických a básnických prostředků, zaměřuje se také na lexikum, především v souvislosti s tím, že román obsahuje lexikální prvky multikulturní londýnské angličtiny, jamajské angličtiny, irského dialektu, urdštiny a arabštiny. Dále diplomová práce román zasazuje do kontextu britské literatury. Gunaratneho román srovnává s díly, která s ním spojuje prostředí, v němž se odehrávají, a v některých případech i specifický hovorový jazyk a téma náboženského a politického extremismu. Diplomová práce pokračuje překladem vybraných ukázek z románu In Our Mad And Furious City, na nějž navazuje krátkou studií o roli hovorového jazyka a dialektů v české literatuře a na historii překladu těchto jevů. Dále diplomová práce představuje překladatelskou metodu použitou pro překlad ukázek Gunaratneho románu, vymezuje hlavní překladatelské problémy v pragmatické, lexikální, stylistické, syntaktické a morfologické rovině a uvádí příklady jejich řešení.
