The paper deals with the status of borrowed and native synonyms in the Czech vocabulary. Lexicaldoublets of the loanword — native equivalent type are usually stated as examples of absolute synonymy, regardless of evident differences of their stylistic characteristics and distribution, as well asevidence against the principle of language economy. Within the presented paper we concentrate onthe basic aspects of differentiation of these synonyms, in spite of correspondence of their designativemeanings, namely divergence of their functional potential and their expressive, collocative, associativeand etymological features. We focus also on the structure and form of these words as theycan influence usage of these words with respect to an assumption of a different perception of synchronicallyforeign lexemes in comparison with their native counterparts.
