Abstract

1 Abstract This bachelor's thesis focuses on various ethnic groups in the region of the Sahara, particulary during the golden age of medieval empires. It also emphasizes the importance and influence of Islam in the whole region and it's role among key ethnic groups. Geographically, the thesis spreads from today's Mauritania to the region around Lake Chad. Sahara is viewed in a wider geographical sense, as it also includes regions considered to be in the Sahel. Also due to extensive historical scale of this thesis, it also deals with influences within concerned ethnic groups. Main goal of this thesis is in depth description of intellectual centers, such as Timbuktu or Walata and the current state of manuscript research in Mali and Mauritania. Repeatedly throughout the thesis, involvement of elite tribal groups into the large scale Trans-Saharan trade is also mentioned, as are some of their mutual alliances that are key factors in today's understanding of this turbulent region. 1 Abstrakt Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na rozmanitá etnika v oblasti Sahary, především pak v průběhu období zlatého věku středověkých říší. Práce také klade důraz na význam a vliv islámu v celé této oblasti a jeho roli v rámci klíčových etnických skupin. V geografickém rámci je práce zasazena do oblasti od dnešní Mauritánie až k oblasti jezera Čad. Sahara je zde vnímána v širším geografickém kontextu, neboť zahrnuje i oblasti, které jsou vnímány jako součástí Sahelu. Vzhledem rovněž k značnému historickému rozsahu práce, se práce zaměří i na interakci rozmanitých etnických skupin. Stěžejním cílem práce je však podrobná analýza intelektuálních center jako byly Timbuktu či Walata a současný stav bádání v oblasti rukopisů na území Mali a Mauritánie. Nesčetněkrát je v práci uveden vliv významných etnických skupin na karavanním obchodu, stejně jako jejich vzájemné vztahy a soupeření, jejichž pochopení je klíčové i pro současné dění v této neklidné oblasti.
