Initialy its space did belong to the longest working privately funded gallery Topičův salon. Its history is elaborated in the first part of the thesis. Topičův salon was created as an exhibition space of the Topič publishing house and operated until the year 1949. That year the Topič publishing house was joined with others to create one state-owned publishing house - Czechoslovak Writer. Topičův salon became the Czechoslovak Writer Gallery. A description of the activities of the gallery between the years 1950- 1956 forms the major part of the thesis. It describes a continuity with the famous Salon and follows critiques of the exhibitions in the press and captures a process of change of the critique of the visual arts.
