The impact of Single Entrance Examinations in the Czech Republic on the socio-economic composition of the classroom

Abstract

This thesis investigates the impact of the introduction of Single Entrance Ex- aminations (SEE) in the Czech Republic on the socio-economic composition and academic performance of students entering upper-secondary education. Using data from PISA 2015 and 2022 for the Czech Republic and Slovakia, and applying difference-in-differences models, the analysis focuses on whether Single Entrance Examinations shifted the composition of students admitted to Maturita tracks in terms of wealth and home learning environment, as well as their mathematics achievement. The results indicate that Single Entrance Examinations led to a modest increase in the average family wealth of students entering vocational or technical schools with Maturita, but had no significant effect on gymnasia or mathematics performance. These findings suggest that, while Single Entrance Examinations altered the socio-economic profile in some upper-secondary pathways, underlying inequalities in educational access per- sist. Tato práce zkoumá dopad zavedení jednotných přijímacích zkoušek (JPZ) v České republice na socioekonomické složení a studijní výsledky žáků nastupu- jících na střední školy. S využitím dat z šetření PISA 2015 a 2022 pro Českou republiku a Slovensko a aplikací metody difference-in-differences se analýza zaměřuje na to, zda JPZ ovlivnily kompozici žáků přijatých do maturitních oborů, co se tíče materiálního zázemí a domácího vzdělávacího prostředí, či jejich výsledků v testu z matematiky. Výsledky naznačují, že J P Z vedly k mírnému nárůstu průměrného bohatství rodin žáků nastupujících na odborné a technické školy s maturitou, avšak neměly významný dopad na gymnázia ani na výsledky v matematice. Tyto poznatky naznačují, že ačkoli JPZ částečně změnily socioekonomický profil některých středních škol, nerovnosti v přís- tupu ke vzdělání přetrvávají. Ačkoli byly některé proměnné zohledněny, cílem práce bylo především odhadnout dopad samotné reformy, přičemž další aspekty zůstávají předmětem budoucího výzkumu.
