Repetition of the pronoun "it" in native and non-native speakers of English

Abstract

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá fenoménem opakování zájmena it v mluvených projevech rodilých a nerodilých mluvčí angličtiny. Zájmeno it má v současné angličtině více různých funkcí, mezi základní z nich řadíme funkci anaforickou a deiktickou. Tyto dvě funkce nazýváme referenční. Dále existuje několik speciálních typů it, ve kterých zájmeno plní jinou funkci než referenční. Tato práce nejprve v teoretické části popisuje zmíněné typy tohoto zájmena a demonstruje jejich použití na konkrétních příkladech z několika anglických mluvnic. Práce zkoumá opakování zájmena it jako jeden z fenoménů řečového managementu. Tento jev je analyzován ve dvou mluvených korpusech. Pro účel výzkumu byl vybrán korpus rodilých mluvčích LOCNEC, jako jeho protějšek byl použit žákovský korpus LINDSEI_CZ, který sestává z výpovědí českých studentů angličtiny. Bakalářská práce si klade za cíl zjistit, zda a případně jak se rodilí a nerodilí mluvčí angličtiny liší ve frekvenčním a funkčním použití opakování it. Samotná analýza se zaměřuje nejprve na absolutní frekvenci opakování zájmena it v každém z korpusů. Druhá část praktické kapitoly se zaměřuje na konkrétní četnost opakování jednotlivých typů it v porovnání LOCNEC a LINDSEI_CZ a dále popisuje slovní spojení, ve kterých se často objevilo opakované it. The subject of this BA thesis is the phenomenon of repeats in the speeches of native and non-native speakers of English. The pronoun it has many different functions in PDE; the basic ones are anaphoric and deictic. These two are the referential functions of it. Furthermore, there are numerous special uses of it, where the pronoun has other than the referential function. The thesis opens with the theoretical background. First, the thesis studies different functions of it and demonstrates them with the use of examples from major English academic grammar books. The text analyses it-repeats as one of the hesitation phenomena and the repeats are examined in two spoken corpora; a native spoken corpus LOCNEC and the counterpart learner corpus LINDSEI_CZ, which contains utterances of Czech learners of English. The aim of this thesis is to find whether native and non-native speakers differ in the frequency and function of it in it-repeats. The analytical part first examines the total frequencies of it-repeats in each of the corpora. Next, individual functions of it-repeats are analysed and then compared in the two corpora.
