Abstract

This Master's degree thesis, named Blood, honour and horror. Representations of siege warfare in journals of British defenders of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, adheres at specific genre of historical anthropology of war and military. It poses questions regarding ana-lysis of contemporary culture of war and its individual variables, their interdependence and changing configuration during the siege of Bergen-op-zoom in 1747, during culmination point of War of Austrian Succession. Meaning of this text consists of an effort to discover alternative way of treating historical sources and to depart traditional conservative methods of analyzing the war conflict using national or confessional military stereotypes, essential features of key actors or theoretical normative of military science. The text comes to conclusion that most irregular and dramatic character of the siege of Bergen-op-zoom was primarily caused by profound misunderstanding between defenders and attackers regarding culture of war, especially acceptable definition of military honour and of legitimate combat techniques. Tato diplomová práce, nazvaná Krev, čest a hrůza - reprezentace pevnostní války v obléhacích denících britských obránců Bergen-op-zoom z roku 1747, se hlásí ke specifickému žánru historické antropologie války a vojenství. Její badatelské otázky směřují na analýzu dobové kultury války a jejích proměnných, jejich vzájemného vztahu a jeho rekonfigurace v průběhu boje o pevnost Bergen-op-zoom v kulminačním bodě Války o dědictví rakouské v roce 1747. Smyslem práce je nalézt alternativní způsob práce s prameny a opustit chápání vojenského střetu podle klasických konzervativních šablon vojenské historie jako národních nebo konfesionálních stereotypů vojenství, esenciálních vlastností hlavních aktérů nebo teoretických standardů vojenské vědy. Práce dospívá k závěru, že dobově mimořádný a dramatický boj o pevnost Bergen-op-zoom se odvíjel primárně od zásadního nedorozumění mezi útočníky a obránci ve smyslu kultury války, především otázek vojenské cti a s ní spojených legitimních způsobů vedení boje.
