Existence lidského společenství je naplněna pohybem a exodem jednotlivců, skupin a někdy i celých etnik. Příčiny těchto migrací jsou různé, v převážné míře jsou ekonomického charakteru, případně je vyvolávají politické, etnické nebo náboženské důvody. Pohnutky vedoucí k opuštění místa, kde se člověk narodil a vyrůstal, musely být vždy dostatečně silné, aby se lidé vydali vstříc neznámu a nejistotě, které je čekaly při cestě i při pobytu v hostitelské zemi. Těmto pravidlům se nevymyká ani italská emigrace na americký kontinent, tedy i do Argentiny. Po odchodu jednotlivců a malých skupin odcházejících z Apeninského poloostrova převážně z politických důvodů následovalo po sjednocení Itálie období masová emigrace, která měla hlavně ekonomické příčiny. V Argentině v druhé polovině 19. století evropská migrace sehrála hlavní úlohu v demografickém vývoji, hospodářské a společenské transformaci země. Nejpočetnější skupinou evropských imigrantů byli právě Italové. V období masové imigrace mezi lety 1881-1914 do Argentiny dorazilo celkem okolo 4.200.000 přistěhovalců, z toho asi 2.000.000 Italů, 1.400.000 Španělů, 170.000 Francouzů a 160.000 Rusů.
