The functions of comment clauses "you know" and "you see" and their Czech translation counterparts

Abstract

Tato práce se s pomocí paralelního korpusu InterCorp zabývá dvěma formálně podobnými tzv. "comment clauses", tj. uvozovacími větami (dále UV) you know a you see. Zaměřuje se především na jejich pragmatické funkce - cílem je zjistit, jestli tyto UV mohou zastupovat všechny funkce tak, jak jsou vyjmenovány a popsány Renatou Povolnou (2010), tedy jestli se vyskytují jako tzv. "appealers", "empathizers", "inform markers" i "monitors", tj. interakční markery s funkcí apelovou, empatickou, informační a monitorovací, a zda případně upřednostňují určitou pozici ve větě. Dále se tato práce soustředí na české překladové protějšky zvolených UV - shrnuje možné způsoby překladu a poukazuje na nejtypičtější ekvivalenty. Snahou je i zjistit, do jaké míry typ pragmatické funkce ovlivňuje překlad. Teoretická část práce shrnuje historii UV a popisuje dva přístupy, jak na ně nahlížet, tedy buď z pozice věty jako na obyčejné větné členy (Quirk a kol. (1985)), nebo z pohledu diskurzu jako na interaktivní markery (Povolná (2010)). Dále je v teoretické části obsažen popis možných protějšků UV v českých gramatikách (Cvrček a kol. The subject of the present paper is an analysis of two formally similar comment clauses (CCs henceforth) you know and you see with the help of a parallel corpus InterCorp. First, the focus is put on their pragmatic functions; it is attempted to find out whether they perform all the functions that can be realized by you-oriented CCs as identified and characterized by Povolná (2010), i.e. whether they can be found both as appealers and empathizers, inform markers and monitors, and whether they prefer a certain sentence-position. Second, the present paper studies the Czech translation counterparts of the selected CCs; it attempts to offer a summary of the strategies concerning the translation of the CCs into Czech and to identify their most typical Czech equivalents. It also examines to what extend the type of the pragmatic function influences the translation. The theoretical part summarizes the history of the phenomenon of CCs and characterizes and describes two approaches generally applied to CCs: CCs as ordinary clause constituents (Quirk et al.
