Skládkování je v současné době ve většině zemí převládajícím způsobem nakládání s tuhým komunálním odpadem (TKO). Na skládkách TKO pak probíhá celá řada procesů, díky nimž, mimo jiné, dochází k produkci skládkového výluhu. Ten kromě celé řady dalších polutantů obsahuje i polokovy, především arsen a antimon. Tyto polokovy se, v závislosti na vlastnostech skládky, mohou vyskytovat v různých chemických formách. Toxicita, mobilita i další vlastnosti těchto prvků jsou na jejich formě závislé, proto je znalost jejich speciace velmi důležitá. K jejímu určení se používá kombinace metody vysoce účinné kapalinové chromatografie (HPLC) a hmotnostní spektrometrie s indukčně vázaným plazmatem (ICPMS). Celková koncentrace polokovů i zastoupení jednotlivých forem jsou značně variabilní. Část polokovů se v prostředí skládkových výluhů váže na koloidy, které tak ovlivňují mobilitu a reaktivitu těchto prvků. Díky znalosti speciace polokovů je pak možné zhodnotit jejich vliv na životní prostředí a navrhnout vhodné technologie pro případnou dekontaminaci skládkových výluhů.

These elements,dependingonthe propertiesof landfills,canexistindifferentchemical species.The knowledge of theirspeciationisveryimportant,because itcanstronglyeffectthe toxicity,mobility and otherpropertiesof these elements.High-performance liquidchromatography(HPLC) andmass spectrometrywithinductivelycoupledplasma(ICPMS) hasbeenappliedtodeterminationof the speciationof metalloidsinlandfill leachates.The total concentrationof metalloidsanddistributionof theirspeciesare highlyvariable.Ithasbeenobservedthata certainfractionof metalloidsinlandfill leachatescanbe boundtocolloids,whichthusaffectthe mobilityandreactivityof these elementsin landfill environments.Knowledgeof the metalloidsspeciationenablestoassesstheirimpactonthe environmentandtosuggestappropriate technologyforpossible decontaminationof landfill leachates.
