Téma rodinných vztahů na pokraji rozpadu je opakujícím se jevem ve hrách amerického dramatika 20. století, Eugena O'Neilla. Jako hlavní zdroj inspirace mu sloužila jeho vlastní rodina a neschopnost jejích členů vymanit se z pavučiny rodinných výčitek, bolesti a provinění. Snažíce se vypořádat s rodinnými traumaty, O'Neill hledá odpovědi na palčivé otázky skrze postavy svých her, kteří podobně jako O'Neill, jen těžko hledají cestu k sobě samým. Vzhledem k O'Neillově zaujetí psychoanalýzou, se kterou se blíže seznámil jako pacient, není divu, že vnitřní životy jeho postav svou důležitostí přesahují samotný děj. Pro porozumění jeho díla je nezbytné zaměřit se na samotné postavy, způsob, jakým na sebe navzájem působí, a do jaké míry jsou ovlivněni vnějšími faktory jako jsou společenské konvence a rodinné vztahy. Je to právě nevědomí postav, které nese stopy všeho, co oni sami potlačili tak hluboce, že není v jejich vědomých silách se tomuto obsahu přiblížit. Jen s pomocí klasických psychoanalytických teorií můžeme určit, na kolik jsou postavy sami sebou, a kde již začíná ten druhý. The recurrent theme of inter-human family relationships in a state of loss and decay in plays authored by Eugene O'Neill arises in part from the author's own traumatic relationship with his parents and with his brother James. Trying to deal with his torturous memories, O'Neill seeks answers through his cursed characters, who partly derive from the writer himself, yet also offer a universal portrayal of humankind as a victim of his own mental being and system. Given O'Neill's profound interest in psychoanalysis, the plays mostly take place in the life process of the individual minds of the protagonists and of the animating effect they have on others who populate the play-texts; therefore it is essential for the understanding of the play-works under critical consideration to look at the inner lives and worlds of these enigmatic characters, and to evaluate to what extent they act on their own will and where, conversely, unconscious forms of desire from other characters, memories, wishes, objects and so forth are instead determinant.
