This bachelor thesis focuses on the relationship between music consumption and social status and primarily describes the influence of music streaming platforms on this relationship. The thesis takes the form of a theoretical literature review, beginning with a summary of Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural homology and Richard Peterson's theory of cultural omnivorousness, which serve as theoretical foundations for work with further sources. It then introduces music streaming platforms and the impact of this form of music distribution on the relationship between music consumption and social status. The main aim of the thesis is to characterize the nature of this relationship based on the selected literature and to analyse how the theories of cultural homology and cultural omnivorousness can be used to explain this phenomenon. The thesis also differentiates part of the literature based on different ways of understanding main concepts, especially distinction and omnivorousness, within both mentioned theoretical approaches. Keywords: Sociology of music; cultural homology thesis; cultural omnivore thesis; music streaming platforms; social status; music consumption; distinction; Pierre Bourdieu
