The thesis analyzes the Old Babylonian Atraḫasīs Myth through a structural lens, providing an alternative interpretation to traditional historical-philological approaches. By focusing on the myth's structure and core themes, the study demonstrates how the myth mediates synchronic and diachronic dimensions. In doing so, the myth solves some of the most fundamental paradoxes of the Mesopotamian classification system. Through an analysis of a series of oppositions-such as gods and humans, life and death, nature and culture, freedom and servitude-the thesis illustrates how the myth assimilates them into synchronic unity. To achieve this, the myth mediates these oppositions through its various motifs and liminal characters. It uses the notion of dialectical unity to show the intermingling, interdependence, isomorphism, symmetry, identity, and non-identity of its oppositions. The study aims to reveal that the myth defines and legitimizes the Mesopotamian cultural system. However, it also demonstrates its limits and paradoxes, while providing a way of dealing with them through the synthesis of synchrony and diachrony.
