This bachelor's thesis examines the work Through the Village Roads by the Tamil writer Natarajan Murugesapandiyan. In 41 chapters the book captures the everyday life of the Tamil countryside in the 1960s and 1970s. Each chapter describes specific cultural or societal phenomenon related to the author's native village. Thus, a detailed literary image of a village is offered to the reader. Based on these ethnographic memoirs, the thesis analyses how the author reconstructs the past from a present perspective. It focuses on the ways in which the author's memories of a Tamil village are interrelated with his critique of modernisation processes. Further it examines how, in the author's construction of this world, authentic details of life in the 1960s and 1970s intertwine with his critical reflection of contemporary reality. Thus, a specific example of how contemporary discourses are reflected in the reconstruction of cultural history is offered. A substantial part of the thesis also provides the necessary context of the author's life and chosen works of his corpus. Since Though the Village Roads depicts the village as an environmentally sustainable unit and emphasizes the ecological value of the local customs, it is analysed from an ecocritical perspective. The final chapter is devoted to contemporary...
