Emily Dickinson|Anne Bradstreet|poetry|death|faith|religion|female identity|PuritanismPředmětem této práce je poezie dvou amerických básnířek, Anne Bradstreetové a Emily Dickinsonové. Obě básnířky vedly jistým způsobem svou vlastní "soukromou vzpouru", a to formou strategického odporu skrze svou poezii.
The subject of this thesis is the poetry of two American women poets, Anne Bradstreet and Emily Dickinson. Although separated by a century and a half, both authors wrote within an inherited Puritan framework and had to navigate the constraints placed on female authors. These shared circumstances and the poets' responses to them make their work a productive object of comparison. Both Bradstreet and Dickinson engaged in their own "private rebellions," a strategic resistance carried out through their poems. The poetry of the authors is examined mainly for two reasons. Firstly, the thesis analyses how differently each of the poets approaches the themes of death, faith and religious doubt, authorship and female identity, and how these differences reflect historical context and the lived experiences of the writers. Secondly, the thesis addresses the numerous ways in which the authors and their poetry have been misrepresented and argues that both poets often strategically worked within these categorisations to create space for their authorship. The first part of the thesis provides an overview of the historical and biographical context necessary for the comparison of the poets' works, focusing on the simplistic mythologization of Bradstreet as a "pious Puritan housewife" and of Dickinson as a "peculiar...
