This thesis examines how Italy's first female Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni constructs her gender identity in selected political speeches and how this construction serves to legitimize her political authority. The analysis is based on a corpus of five speeches from 2019 to 2026, covering both the opposition and governing periods. Critical discourse analysis is used as the analytical method to examine language in a political context. The theoretical framework rests on three concepts: Butler's theory of gender performativity, the archetypes of the Loving Mother and the Harsh Punisher according to Pettersson, Payotte and Sakki, and the theory of femonationalism according to Farris. The analysis shows that Meloni consciously constructs her gender identity through performative acts, switches between both archetypes according to audience and context, and frames this construction with femonationalist discourse. The results also show a transformation between the opposition and governing periods. In opposition, the rhetoric of the Harsh Punisher dominates, while in the governing period performative acts legitimizing institutional authority prevail. The thesis also identifies a paradox in Meloni's discourse, where feminist language is instrumentalized to advance a policy that does not structurally support gender equality.
