It begins by discussing the role of merchants in the everyday life of Imperial Rome, explaining the significance and function of trade as well as the differences between ancient and modern commerce. The following chapter explores the ways in which the state shaped the rules governing trade and how the emperors influenced commercial activity. It also introduces the fundamental concepts of economic terminology that provide the theoretical framework for analysing these processes. Particular attention is devoted to the debate between primitivist and modernist approaches to the ancient economy. The thesis draws extensively on the theoretical framework of New Institutional Economy and the work of its leading proponents. In order to understand the infrastructure of trade, it was necessary to describe the trade routes and to examine how the integration of the commercial system as a whole shaped market structures. The thesis concludes with an analysis of the famous scene "Trimalchio's Banquet" from Petronius' Satyricon. This case study serves to...
