What is behind the success of invasive fish species in the Mediterranean Sea? Abstract The Mediterranean Sea is considered a biodiversity hotspot due to its high biodiversity and endemism. Thanks to theopening of the Suez Canal in 1869, a largenumber of non-native species entered the Mediterranean from the Red Sea and the Indo-Pacific, and currently, the sea is also referred to as hotspot of introduction. Currently, the number of introduced species in the Mediterranean Sea counts approximately 170, and the number is in increase. Main route to the Mediterranean Sea is the Suez Canal, other routes of fish introduction include shipping, aquaculture, and release from aquariums. More than one-fifth of the introduced fish species in the Mediterranean Sea have become invasive, and there are currently 32 invasive species. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to review the available literature and examine the ecological characteristics and life strategies of invasive fish species in the Mediterranean Sea in order to reveal which of these factors contribute to their invasive success. A significant characteristic of many invasive fish species in the Mediterranean Sea is their toxicity, and other anti-predatory strategies. Although invasive species havediversefeeding strategies, they are typically generalists within their...
