This bachelor's thesis explores the representation of surf culture in the films of Bruce Brown. The documentaries of this American director and pioneer of surf cinema fundamentally influenced the awareness of surfing and the perception of the surf community in the second half of the 20th century, a period when the sport transformed from a marginal pastime into a global phenomenon. Therefore, his works represent a significant audiovisual source for examining this subculture. The aim of the thesis was to analyze the way Bruce Brown depicts surfers and their community in his films, and whether and how this representation evolves throughout his career. The work draws on Stuart Hall's theory of representation, which posits that representation is not a passive mirroring of reality, but an active process of its construction. The research is based on qualitative content analysis, which was used to analyze four of Brown's documentaries, such as Slippery When Wet (1958), Surfing Hollow Days (1961), The Endless Summer (1966), and The Endless Summer II (1994). The analysis focused on four main areas, such as the identity of the surfer, their lifestyle, the surf community, and their relationship with the ocean. The results showed that Brown's typical surfer is a young, athletic white male with short hair, who...
