Although the presence of three ploidy levels in the widely distributed South American species Azorella prolifera (Apiaceae) has been known for over 50 years, the distribution, ecology, and morphology of the individual cytotypes have not yet been systematically studied. The aim of this study was to characterize the distribution patterns of diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid cytotypes and to analyze their potential ecological and morphological differentiation. Using flow cytometry, the relative genome size was determined for 1,244 individuals from 149 populations distributed across the species' entire range. Environmental characteristics of the sites, obtained from the CHELSA and SoilGrids databases, were analyzed using nonparametric tests and principal component analysis, and the resulting analyses were further interpreted in the context of existing morphometric and phylogeographic studies. The results reveal a complex distribution pattern of cytotypes that does not correspond to a simple increase in ploidy with latitude, as reported for other polyploid complexes. Instead, polyploid cytotypes (particularly hexaploids) show a significantly higher prevalence in areas that were covered by an ice sheet during the Last Glacial Maximum (0% of diploid, 12.3% of tetraploid, and 28.9% of hexaploid...en_US
Environmentální charakteristiky lokalit, získané z databází CHELSA a SoilGrids, byly analyzovány pomocí neparametrických testů a analýzy hlavních komponent a výsledné analýzy byly dále interpretovány v kontextu existujících morfometrických a fylogeografických studií. Výsledky ukazují komplexní distribuční vzorec cytotypů, který neodpovídá prostému nárůstu ploidie se zeměpisnou šířkou, jaký byl popsán u jiných polyploidních komplexů. Polyploidní cytotypy (zejména hexaploidi) naopak vykazují výrazně vyšší zastoupení na územích pokrytých ledovcovým štítem v době posledního glaciálního maxima (0 % diploidních, 12,3 % tetraploidních a 28,9 % hexaploidních populací), což nasvědčuje jejich vyšší schopnosti kolonizovat postglaciálně otevřená...cs_CZ
