Marie Gabriella Kittl|Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach|Female writer|Governess|Correspondence|German literature of 19th century|Bohemian landsPředkládaná diplomová práce si klade za cíl představit život a dílo Marie Gabriely Kittlové (1809-1894) a přispět tak k výzkumu problematiky německy píšících autorek z českých zemí v "dlouhém 19. století", jejichž tvorba donedávna zůstávala spíše stranou tuzemského badatelského zájmu. Kittlová bývá v odborné literatuře zmiňována téměř výlučně jako sestra hudebního skladatele a ředitele pražské konzervatoře Jana Bedřicha Kittla (1806-1868) či guvernantka a později dlouholetá přítelkyně spisovatelky Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach (1830-1916).
The aim of this Master's thesis is to present the life and work of Marie Gabrielle Kittl (1809-1894) and thereby contribute to raising the profile of germanophone female writers of the 'long 19th century' in the Bohemian lands, which has so far been rather limited. Marie Gabrielle Kittl is nowadays best known as a sister of the Prague patriotic composer Johann Friedrich Kittl (1806-1868) and as the governess of the young Marie von Ebner- Eschenbach, née Baroness Dubsky (1830-1916); however, her own literary works, as well as her life story, remain overshadowed by these famous figures. Her extensive correspondence with Ebner-Eschenbach - with whom she continued to correspond even after she left chateau Zdislawitz - bears witness not only to the mutual artistic influence between the two authors, but also to the deep friendship between them. Kittl was both a wise mentor and a candid critic to her younger and more famous friend. In this study, Kittl is portrayed as a passionate traveler, an author of novellas with exotic themes and a lady-in-waiting to the Belgian Queen Marie Henrietta of Habsburg-Lorraine, as well as governess of the future Mexican Emperess Charlotte of Belgium. Moreover, in her literary works, she portrays herself as a contemporary witness to many historical events of her time,...
