Lucius Annaeus Seneca, Naturales quaestiones. Překlad VII. knihy, úvod a komentář

Abstract

The aim of the present thesis is to create the first Czech translation of Book 7 of Lucius Annaeus Seneca's Natural Questions. The first part of the thesis introduces the author and his work, with particular emphasis on Natural Questions. It briefly discusses the manuscript tradition and editions of the work, the question of the order of its books, Seneca's literary style and moral aspects of the work. This part also provides an overview of the sources on which Seneca drew in composing Book 7, together with a brief introduction to comets as the central subject of the book. The second part consists of the Czech translation of Book 7 accompanied by a commentary explaining lesser known historical and cultural references, meteorological terminology and more challenging passages of the text. The commentary also compares Seneca's observations and conclusions with the findings of modern astronomy.

Hlavním cílem této práce je vypracování prvního českého překladu sedmé knihy spisu Otázky přírodní filozofie Lucia Annaea Seneky. První část práce představuje autora a jeho dílo se zvláštním zaměřením na Otázky přírodní filozofie. Stručně se věnuje rukopisné tradici a edicím tohoto spisu, otázce pořadí jednotlivých knih, Senekovu stylu a morálním aspektům díla. Součástí této části je rovněž přehled pramenů, z nichž Seneca při psaní sedmé knihy vycházel, a stručná charakteristika komet jako hlavního tématu této knihy. Druhou část práce tvoří samotný překlad sedmé knihy doplněný komentářem, který objasňuje zejména méně známé dobové reálie, meteorologickou terminologii a obtížnější místa textu a srovnává Senekova pozorování a závěry s poznatky současné astronomie.
