Příčiny podceňování Japonska před válkou v Tichomoří: japonské tažení v Malajsii v letech 1941 až 1942

Abstract

The central theme of this thesis is Japanese military campaign and invasion of Malaya and Singapore between years 1941 and 1942. The primary objective of thesis is to closely analyze the causes of Japanese succes in capturing these regions and causes of British failure in defending them. The first chapter of this thesis is dedicated to Japan as rising power and Japan's relations with other, Western powers, particularly in the period from end of the 19th century to the time after end of the First World War. The second chapter is dedicated to the interwar period with specific aim at Japanese Empire and British Empire and their conflict of interest in the Southeast Asia region. These two chapters are rather descriptive; however, they provide the historical context necessary for a full understanding of content of the third chapter, which deals with the military clash between Japan and Great Britain in the Malaya and Singapore region in detail. Analysis included in this chapter aims to answer questions asked in the introductory part of this thesis.

Ústředním tématem této práce je japonské vojenské tažení a invaze do Malajska a Singapuru v letech 1941 až 1942. Primárním cílem práce je blíže prozkoumat příčiny japonského úspěchu v dobytí těchto oblastí a příčiny neúspěchu Velké Británie v jejich obraně. První kapitola této práce se věnuje Japonsku jakožto nově vycházející velmoci a jeho vztahům s ostatními, západními mocnostmi, konkrétně v období od konce 19. století do doby po první světové válce. Druhá kapitola je věnována meziválečnému období s konkrétním zaměřením na Japonské císařství a Britské impérium a jejich střetávající se zájmy v oblasti jihovýchodní Asie. Tyto dvě kapitoly jsou spíše popisného charakteru, avšak přinášejí kontext a historické souvislosti nutné k plnému porozumění obsahu třetí kapitoly, která se detailně věnuje vojenskému střetnutí mezi Japonskem a Velkou Británií v oblasti Malajska a Singapuru. Analýza v této části si klade za cíl odpovědět na otázky položené v úvodní části práce.
