In this thesis, we study composite fields L composed of a simplest cubic field and a quadratic field; mainly, we focus on its squares and the relationship with its subfields. In particular, we characterize when an element of a subfield can be a square in the composite field. Furthermore, we study the Pythagoras number, which gives the minimal number of squares required to express every algebraic integer in L representable as a sum of squares. For that, first, we provide lower bounds 5 or 6 using suitable elements from subfields. Second, we show that under some conditions, these estimates can be improved to get 7. We also present an algorithm for finding all totally positive elements of the ring of algebraic integers up to a given trace and check whether they are squares or sums of squares, together with an implementation.
