Tento kulturní časopis přitom vnímá jako kolaborativní projekt, spíše než pouhý zdroj textů, a tvrdí, že al-Ḍiyāʾ, motivovaný na přelomu 19. a 20. století kontextově specifickou touhou po poznání, artikuloval sebevědomou vizi vzrušujícího, dostupného a uspořádaného světa. Přitom práce zdůrazňuje roli fiktivních příběhů, které časopis publikoval, jelikož umožňovaly zachytit a komunikovat tuto vizi pro vznikající arabskou čtenářskou veřejnost v její komplexnosti. Výzkum se opírá o impulsy z teorie periodického tisku a deskriptivní translatologie, přičemž metodologicky čerpá z teorie "významných míst" (significant geographies).
The dissertation explores the world as it was imagined, organised and made intelligible by the Cairene cultural journal al-Ḍiyāʾ (Illumination, 1898-1906), which was edited by the Syrian linguist and scholar Ibrāhīm al-Yāzijī. Approaching the journal as a journalistic project rather than a mere repository of ideas, it argues that al-Ḍiyāʾ, driven by context-specific curiosity, articulated a vision of an exciting, available and orderly world and relied on fiction to communicate its complexity for the emergent public of Arab readers. Situated within the tradition of Nahḍa Studies, and drawing on the methodologies of periodical studies, descriptive translation studies and significant geographies, the dissertation highlights the role of (the mostly translated) fictional stories in the journal's proclaimed didactic mission. Conceptualising the journal as a collection of heterogeneous pieces of information, a cabinet of curiosities, the dissertation attends to the different types of knowledge bound together through the logic of strangeness, usefulness and entertainment. Mapping the migration journey of the Syrian diaspora in Egypt and beyond. along with the circulation of the journal and its translated texts, it shows al-Ḍiyāʾ as a community-building tool of its editor, the young translators he provided...
