Memory Narratives in Post-Agreement Northern Irish Novels

Abstract

This dissertation examines a selection of post-1998 novels by Northern Irish authors and their representation of memory processes, focusing on how narratives of the Northern Irish conflict (The Troubles) are constructed, transmitted and adapted across generations of characters. Having determined similar trend in the province's society, the analysis turns to contemporary fiction from the province to investigate how divisive, conflict narratives continue to shape individual and communal identity. The dissertation's methodology combines narratology with interdisciplinary memory studies, utilising concepts from cognitive psychology as well as sociology and philosophy of memory. This combined framework allows for the analysis of individual novels on several, interrelated levels. Particular attention is given to memory narratives and passing on of narratives as they illustrate the intergenerational transmission of community divisions, binaries, inherited stories, traditions, rules as well as silences. Each chapter's analysis focuses on several texts of a single author. Authors were selected precisely due to their repeated, sustained interest in the topic of the Northern Irish conflict and its influence on individuals and communities. Tato disertační práce zkoumá vybraná díla severoirských autorů z období po roce 1998 a jejich zobrazení procesů paměti, s důrazem na to, jak jsou narativy severoirského konfliktu (The Troubles) konstruovány, předávány a adaptovány napříč generacemi postav. Na základě identifikace podobného trendu ve společnosti země se analýza zaměřuje na současnou beletrii z této země, aby zhodnotila, jak dělící a konfliktní narativy nadále formují identitu jednotlivců i komunit. Metodologie disertační práce kombinuje naratologii s interdisciplinárními paměťovými studiemi a využívá pojmy z kognitivní psychologie, sociologie a filozofie paměti. Tento kombinovaný přístup umožňuje analýzu jednotlivých románů na několika vzájemně propojených úrovních. Pozornost je věnována zejména paměťovým narativům a jejich předávání, jelikož ilustrují mezigenerační přenos komunitních rozporů, binárních opozic, převzatých příběhů, tradic, pravidel i umlčování. Analýza jednotlivých kapitol se zaměřuje na několik textů stejného autora. Autoři byli vybráni právě kvůli jejich opakovanému a trvalému zájmu o téma severoirského konfliktu a jeho vlivu na jednotlivce a komunity.
