Note All and Nothing: Indeterminacy of Meaning in the Writing of Samuel Beckett and Experimental Music of the New York School

Abstract

The research presented in the thesis is directed at the investigation of the indeterminacy of meaning and how it figures in the selected cultural phenomena by Samuel Beckett and the New York School. Considering that the discussion of the said cultural pieces requires simultaneous exploration of two different media, text and sound, one of the first goals of the thesis lies in the creation of the common theoretical and methodological plane. The thesis relies on the critique of the Western philosophical approach suggested by François Laruelle in his project of non-philosophy. At the same time, the methodological part derives from the theory of Karen Barad and their understanding of the matter/meaning entanglement. These theories among others help to shape a series of approaches and practical guidelines that stem first and foremost directly from the chosen textual and sonic pieces. In addition to that, a significant role is assigned to the theoretical-informational theory described by Fred I. Dretske that within the contexts of the present thesis is responsible for the essential substitution of the concept of meaning with the concept of information, which greatly affects the investigation of indeterminacy and its specificities in the chosen cultural phenomena. Výzkum představený v této disertaci je zaměřen na zkoumání neurčitosti významu a na to, jak se tato neurčitost projevuje ve vybraných kulturních fenoménech Samuela Becketta a Newyorské školy. Vzhledem k tomu, že diskuse o zmíněných kulturních dílech vyžaduje současné zkoumání dvou odlišných médií, textu a zvuku, spočívá jeden z prvních cílů disertace ve vytvoření společné teoretické a metodologické roviny. Disertace se opírá o kritiku západního filozofického přístupu, již navrhuje François Laruelle ve svém projektu nefilozofie. Současně metodologická část vychází z teorie Karen Barad a jejich pojetí provázanosti hmoty a významu. Tyto teorie a další pomáhají utvářet soubor přístupů a praktických postupů, které vycházejí především a přímo z vybraných textových a zvukových děl. Kromě toho je významná role přisouzena teorii informace, již popisuje Fred I. Dretske, která je v kontextu této disertace zodpovědná za zásadní nahrazení pojmu význam pojmem informace. Toto nahrazení výrazně ovlivňuje zkoumání neurčitosti a jejích specifik ve vybraných kulturních fenoménech.
