This paper examines the memoirs of Vasily Vereshchagin, a Russian artist and officer who traveled through Central Asia in 1867-1868 and participated in the defense of the Samarkand citadel. The aim of this study is to clarify how Vereshchagin depicts the landscape and inhabitants of Central Asia in his memoirs and to what extent his representations correlate with the accounts of his contemporaries (Terentyev, Grigoriev). Methodologically, the study draws on Teun van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, specifically the strategy of emphasizing and de-emphasizing positive or negative traits to create an image of "in-group" and "out- group." The analysis relies on the identification of linguistic markers, such as syntax, vocabulary, and rhetorical devices. The conclusion of the study is that Vereshchagin speaks within the framework of imperial discourse and shares views on the civilizing mission as a justification for expansion. At the same time, his texts are not so unambiguous. Vereshchagin expresses a negative attitude toward the social order in Central Asia and, at the same time, curiosity regarding material culture.
