Stranické frakce v politice USA: případ Republikánské strany v Massachusetts

Abstract

This bachelor's thesis examines the evolution of factions within the Republican Party in the United States. Central to this study is a comparison of two candidates, Charlie Baker and Geoff Diehl, each representing a different faction within the party. The aim of the thesis was to determine how the party functions and how internal party dynamics influence election results. The thesis consisted of the aforementioned comparison and a subsequent analysis of election results. Data for the comparison was obtained from two regional media outlets, specifically The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald. The thesis provided insight into the inner workings of a political party, demonstrating how factions operate and how they interact with one another. The results showed that the candidate associated with the MAGA movement-a highly polarizing figure-failed to succeed in the general election, unlike his colleague, who presented himself as a moderate centrist politician willing to compromise with the other side. While the centrist candidate was able to secure a clear victory, he faced challenges within his own party; the MAGA candidate, on the other hand, could count on support from his party colleagues who came from the same faction.

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá vývojem frakcí uvnitř Republikánské strany ve Spojených státech. Stěžejní pro tuto práci je komparace dvou kandidátů Charlieho Bakera a Geoffa Diehla, každý z různé části strany. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, jak funguje strana, a jak se vnitrostranický vývoj podepisuje na volebních výsledcích. Práce se skládala z již zmíněné komparace a následné porovnávání volebních výsledků. Data pro komparaci jsou získávána ze dvou regionálních médií, konkrétně z The Boston Globe a Boston Herald. Práce přinesla nahlédnutí dovnitř politické strany, ukázala, jak fungují frakce, a jak mezi sebou vzájemně fungují. Výsledky ukázaly, že kandidát spojený s hnutím MAGA a silně polarizující kandidát nedokázal uspět ve všeobecných volbách, na rozdíl od jeho kolegy, který se prezentoval jako umírněný středový politik, ochotný dosáhnout kompromisu s druhou stranou. Zatímco středový kandidát byl schopný dosáhnout jasného vítězství, potýkal se s problémy s vlastní stranou, kandidát z hnutí MAGA se mohl spolehnout na podporu od svých stranických kolegů, kteří pocházejí ze stejné frakce.
