Integration of Ukrainian students into the system of higher education in the Czech Republic

Abstract

This thesis examines the issue of integrating Ukrainian students holding temporary protection visas into the higher education system in the Czech Republic. Its aim is to investigate how Ukrainian students under temporary protection and selected staff members at Charles University assess the process of academic and social integration of Ukrainian students at the university. The theoretical section primarily presents the general concept of integration and Tinto's model of social and academic integration. Additionally, the thesis examines the institutional and policy context of supporting the integration of Ukrainian students and, based on the current state of knowledge, the role of universities in integrating refugee students. The empirical part consists of a qualitative approach implemented through content analysis of documents and semi-structured interviews. The data obtained show that Ukrainian students are successfully adapting in the areas studied, and the university is successfully implementing support measures for them, although there is room for improvement. At the same time, the thesis points to the need to support refugee students in general and offers potential inspiration for changes to university policies in this area.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou integrace ukrajinských studentů s vízem dočasné ochrany do systému vysokoškolského vzdělávání v České republice. Jejím cílem je prozkoumat, jak ukrajinští studenti využívající dočasnou ochranu a vybraní zaměstnanci Karlovy univerzity hodnotí proces akademické a sociální integrace ukrajinských studentů na univerzitě. Teoretická část představuje především obecný koncept integrace a Tintoův model sociální a akademické integrace. Práce dále představuje institucionální a politický kontext podpory integrace ukrajinských studentů a na základě současného stavu poznání roli univerzit při integraci studentů-uprchlíků. Empirická část představuje kvalitativní přístup realizovaný pomocí obsahové analýzy dokumentů a polostrukturovaných rozhovorů. Získaná data ukazují, že ve sledovaných oblastech se ukrajinští studenti úspěšně adaptují a že univerzita účinně implementuje podpůrná opatření pro ně, i když existuje prostor pro zlepšení. Zároveň práce poukazuje na nutnost podpory studentů-uprchlíků obecně a představuje možnou inspiraci pro změny v univerzitní politice v této oblasti.
