Situated in the window surrounding the start of the 1880s to the start of the 1890s, I model tariff-exposure using shift-share instruments which weight the industry-level changes in tariff rates and duty type counts from the Mongrel Tariff of 1883 to the McKinley Tariff of 1890 by county-level industry employment compositions. This cross-sectional analysis examines the average changes in protectionist newspaper slant and other tariff related term frequency outcomes on the county-level as a function of increased tariff exposure and explores differential correlations in above and below median manufacturing subsamples. V období od počátku 80. let do počátku 90. let 19. století modeluji celní expozici pomocí nástrojů shift-share, které váží změny celních sazeb a počtů typů cel na úrovni odvětví od Mongrelova celního zákona z roku 1883 po McKinleyho celní zákon z roku 1890 podle skladby zaměstnanosti v odvětvích na úrovni okresů. Tato průřezová analýza zkoumá průměrné změny protekcionistického zaměření novin a další výsledky týkající se frekvence termínů souvisejících s cly na úrovni okresů jako funkci zvýšené celní expozice a zkoumá rozdílné korelace v podvzorcích okresů s nadmediánovým a podmediánovým podílem zpracovatelského průmyslu.
