This thesis focuses on understanding the influence of alloying elements, Mg and Cu, on resulting mechanical properties of binary biodegradable Zn-0.1Mg (0.1 wt% Mg) and Zn-1.6Cu (1.6 wt% Cu) alloys in the form of extruded wires with a diameter of 1 mm. Mechanical properties were investigated using tensile testing at room temperature. To provide a comprehensive description of the active deformation mechanisms, the mechan- ical testing was supplemented by in-situ acoustic emission monitoring and ex-situ mi- crostructural characterization using scanning electron microscopy, including advanced data analysis. Elucidating the role of individual deformation mechanisms during plas- tic deformation will contribute to the current knowledge and enable the design of new Zn-based alloys that meet the mechanical property requirements for medical applications.
