Female gaze v knize Čtvrté křídlo a jeho kritická odezva v českých uživatelských a influencerských recenzích

Abstract

This master's thesis focuses on the manifestation of the female gaze concept in the romantasy novel Fourth Wing by author Rebecca Yarros, as well as on the reception of this concept in lay reviews. The aim of the thesis is to determine, by means of the research method of qualitative content analysis, how the concept manifests itself in the novel's characters, and also whether and how its individual attributes are thematised in user reviews on the Databáze knih platform and on the social media platform Instagram. The theoretical foundation of the thesis draws on the characterisation of the romantasy genre, its popularity and target audience; further on the female gaze concept of viewing, which is delineated against the binary opposing concept of the male gaze and defined on the basis of three attributes: agentivity, autonomy, and complex personality traits. Last but not least, the theoretical foundation also encompasses amateur literary criticism in the context of participatory culture. The conducted research revealed the presence of all female gaze categories in the novel - the characters often display signs of agentivity, preserve or infringe upon the autonomy of other actors in various ways, and the majority of them possess complex traits tied primarily to their personality. Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na manifestaci female gaze konceptu v romantasy knize Čtvrté křídlo od autorky Rebeccy Yarros, a také na odezvu tohoto konceptu v laických recenzích. Cílem práce je pomocí výzkumné metody kvalitativní obsahové analýzy zjistit, jak se koncept projevuje na knižních postavách, a také, zda a jak jsou jeho dílčí atributy tematizované v uživatelských recenzích na platformě Databáze knih a na sociální síti Instagram. Teoretický základ práce se opírá o charakteristiku romantasy žánru, jeho popularitu a cílové publikum; dále o female gaze koncept nahlížení, který je vymezen vůči binárně opozičnímu konceptu male gaze a definován na základě třech atributů: akceschopnosti, autonomie a komplexních vlastností postav. V neposlední řadě je součást teoretického základu také laická literární kritika v kontextu participativní kultury. Realizovaný výzkum odhalil zastoupení všech female gaze kategorií v románu - postavy převážně vykazují znaky akceschopnosti, různým způsobem zachovávají či narušují autonomii jiného aktérstva, a většina z nich nabývá komplexních vlastností vázaných především na svůj charakter. Následná analýza laických recenzí ukázala, že se kritici v textech samovolně a implicitně vztahují k atributům female gaze konceptu a nezávisle na existenci těchto kategorií...
