This master's thesis aims to compare two radiotherapeutic approaches used in the treatment of early-stage breast cancer, whole breast irradiation (WBI) and partial breast irradiation (PBI). The study focuses on differences in dosimetric and dose-volume parameters of both methods and their impact on target volume coverage and dose exposure of surrounding organs using the VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy) technique. The practical part is based on the creation and analysis of two treatment plans for each of twenty patients. Twenty plans represent whole breast irradiation, while twenty are focused solely on the tumour bed. All plans were created with an identical prescribed dose of 40 Gy in 15 fractions. The evaluation was performed based on target volume coverage parameters and analysis of dose exposure to organs at risk (OAR), particularly cardiac structures, lungs, and the contralateral breast. The findings indicate that the PBI technique leads to lower values of selected dosimetric and dose-volume parameters for the evaluated OAR compared to WBI. It may therefore be dosimetrically more advantageous in appropriately selected patients.
