The rhetorical strategies of non-governmental organisations on women's rights in Afghanistan after 2021

Abstract

The primary goal of this thesis is to examine the rhetorical strategies employed by non- governmental organisations in the discourse on women's rights in Afghanistan following the Taliban's return to power in 2021. This event led to a significant restriction of women's rights and their systematic exclusion from public life. This thesis aims to analyse how these organisations construct narratives about Afghan women and to examine the role of language in this process. The theoretical framework draws on postcolonial feminism and Critical Discourse Analysis, with an emphasis on the interconnection of language, power, and the production of knowledge. The analytical section of the thesis uses Critical Discourse Analysis to examine the annual reports of four non-governmental organisations through the lens of postcolonial feminism. For the purpose of this study, two Western and two local Non-governmental organisations were selected to enable a subsequent comparison of their discourses. Specifically, the analysis focuses on the representation of women, their agency, the attribution of responsibility, and the framing of foreign interventions. Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje rétorickým strategiím nevládních organizací v diskurzu o ženských právech v Afghánistánu po návratu Tálibánu k moci v roce 2021. Tato událost vedla k výraznému omezení práv žen a jejich systematickému vyloučení z veřejného života. Cílem práce je analyzovat, jakým způsobem tyto organizace vytvářejí narativy o afghánských ženách a jakou roli v tomto procesu hraje jazyk. Teoretický rámec je založen na postkoloniálním feminismu a kritické diskurzivní analýze, přičemž je kladen důraz na propojení jazyka, moci a produkce vědění. Analytická část práce využívá kritickou diskurzivní analýzu ke zkoumání výročních zpráv čtyř nevládních organizací na základě postkoloniálního feminismu. Pro účely této práce byly vybrány dvě západní nevládní organizace a dvě lokální, aby bylo možné následné porovnání jejich diskurzu. Analýza se konkrétně zaměřuje na reprezentaci žen, jejich agentnost, přisuzování odpovědnosti a rámování zahraničních intervencí. Práce tak příspívá k pochopení toho, jak diskurz nevládních organizací ovlivňuje interpretaci ženských práv v Afghánistánu v mezinárodním kontextu.
