Sebereprezentace tradičních a antirasistických frakcí skinheadské subkultury v současném britském a americkém dokumentárním filmu

Abstract

This bachelor's thesis examines the representation of members of traditional and anti-racist factions of the British and American skinhead subcultures in documentary film. Since this subculture is portrayed by the media as predominantly negative and without the involvement of the participants themselves, the aim of this thesis is to analyze the ways in which the participants in the selected documentaries present their own subculture. In the first part, the thesis presents the historical development of the subculture, coverage of the academic debate, and defines key theories and concepts. This is followed by an analysis of selected films, the British documentary The Story of Skinheads with Don Letts and the American documentary The Baldies. Using the method of qualitative thematic analysis, the thesis answers the research question of how traditional and anti-racist skinheads represent their subculture in the documentaries. The paper comes to the conclusion that both filmmakers and the participants themselves aim to rehabilitate its image. Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá reprezentací členů tradičních a antirasistických frakcí britské a americké skinheadské subkultury v dokumentárním filmu. Jelikož je tato subkultura médii zobrazována převážně negativně a bez zapojení samotných aktérů, je cílem práce analyzovat způsoby, jakými aktéři ve vybraných dokumentech sami prezentují obraz vlastní subkultury. V první části bakalářská práce představuje historický vývoj subkultury, pokrytí akademické debaty a vymezení klíčových teorií a konceptů. Následuje analýza vybraných snímků, jimiž jsou britský dokument The Story of Skinheads with Don Letts a americký dokument The Baldies. S využitím metody kvalitativní tematické analýzy práce odpovídá na výzkumnou otázku, jakým způsobem tradiční a antirasističtí skinheadi v dokumentech svou subkulturu reprezentují. Práce dochází k závěru, že filmaři i samotní aktéři usilují o rehabilitaci jejího obrazu. Aktéři se k subkultuře zpětně hrdě hlásí, zdůrazňují své negativní postoje vůči krajně pravicovým a rasistickým frakcím a ochotu aktivně proti nim bojovat. Tyto projevy však práce interpretuje také jako snahy aktérů odůvodňovat a ospravedlňovat přetrvávající sklony k násilí a vandalismu.
