An Interpretation of the American Dream and Its Embodiment in the 1950s

Abstract

The 1950s, particularlythe idealisedversionof the Americansuburbandream captured through period and modern media, is still a concept many white Americans cling to as the embodiment of the golden years in the United States. This decade was defined by steady economic growth, political stability, and expansion of the middle class. In contrast, during the next decades - 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the white middle class faced economic difficulties as well as loss of trust in the presidential institution, which marked the slow shattering of the suburban dream and the life "behind the white picket fence." This bachelor's thesis works with the hypothesis that the struggles of the white middle class in the second half of the twentieth century further influenced the collective memory of the general American populace, consolidating the 1950s as the superior decade. Methodologically,the thesis works with critical analysis of preselected historical events of each decade,specificallyfocusingonthe historical-sociological perspective through analysis of polls and studies on public attitudes and opinions in the specific periods of time. Padesátá léta dvacátého století,častovyobrazovaná jako ztělesnění americkéhopředměstského snu v dobových i moderníchmédiích,bývají mnohými bílými Američanydoposudpovažována za zlatou éru Spojených států. Tato dekáda byla definována ekonomickým růstem, politickou stabilitou a rozmachem střední třídy. V následujících dekádách se však střední třída potýkala s ekonomickými krizemi a ztrátoudůvěryv prezidentskýúřad,což zapříčinilopostupnýrozklad tzv. předmětstského snu a života "za bílým laťkovým plotem." Tato bakalářská práce pracuje s hypotézou, že potíže bělošské střední třídy v druhé polovině dvacátého století ovlivnily kolektivní paměť bílých Američanů a utvrdily představu padesátých let jako politicky a ekonomicky stabilní dekády. Z metodologického hlediska práce využívá kritickou analýzu předem vybraných historických událostí z šedesátých, sedmdesátých a osmdesátých let se zaměřením na historicko-sociologickourovinuprostřednictvím analýzydobových průzkumů a dotazníkůveřejnéhomínění.Hlavním cílem práce je popsat změnyv americkém předměstském snu v rámci bělošské střední třídy s ohledem na vliv vybraných historických událostí na utváření, rozklad a obnovu tohoto fenoménu.
