Abstract

Social Participation of Older Adults in an Aging Population: The Case of Italy and South Korea Abstract This thesis examines the social participation and subjective satisfaction of older adults within the context of demographic aging in Italy and South Korea. Although both countries share a tradition of familialism, they differ in their aging dynamics and levels of social security. The study analyzes the trajectory of population aging in both nations and outlines the current state of social participation among older adults. Using ordinal logistic regression on data from the harmonized SHARE and KLoSA surveys, the thesis identifies key factors associated with life satisfaction, or satisfaction with quality of life, in old age. The findings reveal that while Italy's generous pension system allows the majority of older adults to leave the labor market, the high employment rate among older adults in South Korea is often driven by the risk of poverty. In both states, the primary predictors of satisfaction are good health, physical activity, and the absence of isolation, which aligns with the concepts of active and successful aging. Sociální participace seniorů ve stárnoucí populaci: Případ Itálie a Jižní Koreje Abstrakt Tato práce zkoumá sociální zapojení a subjektivní spokojenost seniorů v kontextu demografického stárnutí Itálie a Jižní Koreje. Obě země sdílejí tradici familialismu, avšak liší se dynamikou stárnutí a úrovní sociálního zabezpečení. Práce analyzuje průběh populačního stárnutí v obou zemích a přibližuje současný stav sociální participace seniorů. Prostřednictvím ordinální logistické regrese dat z harmonizovaných výběrových šetření SHARE a KLoSA jsou identifikovány klíčové faktory související s životní spokojeností, resp. spokojeností s kvalitou života ve stáří. Výstupy ukazují, že zatímco v Itálii umožňuje štědrý penzijní systém odchod většiny seniorů z pracovního trhu, v Jižní Koreji je vysoká zaměstnanost seniorů často vynucena rizikem chudoby. V obou státech jsou hlavními prediktory spokojenosti dobré zdraví, fyzická aktivita a absence izolace, což koresponduje s koncepty aktivního a úspěšného stárnutí. Výsledky naznačují, že udržitelná implementace moderních konceptů stárnutí vyžaduje přesun pozornosti od pouhé snahy o prodlužování pracovního života k zajištění finanční stability a možnosti volby společenské role.
