This thesis analyses attitudes of Tunisian population towards immigration and immigrants and tests the relevance of standard theoretical approaches explaining the formation of these attitudes in a non-Western context. The thesis is grounded in the assumption that attitudes toward immigration are not shaped by the same universal mechanisms and aims to verify to what extent established theoretical concepts are applicable in the Tunisian context. Tunisia represents an interesting case, as it has transformed over the past decade from a primarily emigration country into a transit and, to some extent, destination country, in a context of long- term socioeconomic uncertainty and a rapidly shifting political and media discourse on migration. The empirical section is based on quantitative secondary analysis of data from the international surveys (Afrobarometer, Arab Barometer, and World Values Survey), which allow for tracking the temporal development of attitudes and their relationship to individual and contextual factors. Methodologically, the thesis employs two-sample statistical tests, correlation analysis, categorical principal component analysis, and regression analysis. The results show that Tunisian society has undergone a shift over the past decade from prevailing indifference toward greater...
