This bachelor thesis focuses on phosphonium salts and evaluates their effects, as well as the influence of the phosphonium cations themselves, on the mitochondrial membrane. Mitochondria and the mitochondrial membrane represent a significant therapeutic target in selected parasitic protists, namely Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosoma brucei. The work also examines the antimicrobial potential of these compounds, which stems from their ability to deliver the active agent directly into the mitochondrion, thereby enabling selective action against major human diseases. This property offers promising opportunities for the development of new effective antiparasitic drugs, especially in light of the increasing resistance to currently available treatments. The thesis further includes a comparison of the mitochondrial membrane structure of the selected parasitic protists with that of the human mitochondrion, taking into account its variability depending on the parasite's life cycle stage.
