The interbreeding of anatomically modern humans with Neanderthals and Denisovans is a well-established evolutionary process of the Late Pleistocene. This thesis focuses on the phenotypic consequences of this admixture, specifically its morphological traces in the skeletal record and in the genome of contemporary populations. The aim is to critically evaluate to what extent the findings from the study of hybridization in living primates are transferable to the paleoanthropological context. The foundation is based on studies of living primates, particularly hybrid baboons with documented pedigrees. These studies show that hybridization is morphologically manifested primarily by developmental anomalies (supernumerary teeth, abnormal cranial sutures, and craniofacial asymmetry) and transgressive traits that exceed the range of variation of the parental populations. These traits arise from the disruption of coadapted developmental networks during the mixing of two distinct ontogenetic programs. In the paleoanthropological record, morphological traces of hybridization are documented in a number of Upper Paleolithic fossils, such as the individuals from Peștera cu Oase, Lagar Velho, or the Mladeč Caves. However, their interpretation is methodologically complicated by the absence of direct genetic data for...
