Representation and Determinability of Meaning

Abstract

4 Abstract This dissertation offers a systematic philosophical investigation into the representation and determinability of meaning, integrating phenomenological, ontological, and epistemological perspectives. It begins by establishing meaning as both an aspect of lived experience in which things appear as meaningful or meaningless and a pragmatic function embedded in cognitive and communicative practices. A prominent praxis among these would be the praxis of questioning meaning and meaningfulness, which as a self-reflective method discloses fundamental aspects of meaning, namely, its claim to transcendence and its univocity, guaranteed by this claim. The body of the thesis consists of two chapters devoted to ontological and epistemological aspects of meaning, respectively. The underlying theme of both chapters is a characteristic trait of meaning, which is to make a difference - albeit explored from different perspectives. In the chapter on ontology, this aspect is elucidated in logical and formal ontological contexts by means of a concept of individuality without identity (which I presented already in a separate article encapsulating ideas explored here). 6 Abstrakt Tato disertační práce nabízí systematické filosofické zkoumání reprezentace a vymezitelnosti smyslu, přičemž integruje fenomenologické, ontologické a epistemologické perspektivy. Nejprve definuje význam jako aspekt prožité zkušenosti, v níž se věci jeví jako smysluplné nebo nesmyslné, a jako pragmatickou funkci zakotvenou v kognitivních a komunikačních praktikách. Význačná praktika mezi nimi je zpochybňování smyslu a smysluplnosti, neboť jako sebereflexivní metoda odhaluje základní aspekty významu, konkrétně jeho nárok na transcendenci a jeho jednoznačnost, zaručenou tímto nárokem. Hlavní část práce se skládá ze dvou kapitol věnovaných ontologickým a epistemologickým aspektům významu. Základním tématem obou kapitol je charakteristický rys významu, kterým je vytváření rozdílu - i když je zkoumán z různých perspektiv. V kapitole o ontologii je tento aspekt objasněn v logických a formálních ontologických kontextech pomocí pojmu individuality bez identity (který jsem již představil v samostatném článku shrnujícím myšlenky zkoumané zde). V kapitole o epistemologii je tematizována determinace, kolaps a rozsah významu a zmíněný aspekt je prezentován jako základ pro možnost a nepostradatelnost skutečné komunikace.
