Age-at-death estimation is an integral part of anthropological analysis in the study of past populations. Assessment of the more variable age-related degenerative and productive changes in the adult skeleton is more difficult compared to developmental changes in juveniles, making accurate and reliable estimation of adult age a challenging task. Morphological methods of age estimation allow reliable estimation within broader age classes, which is insufficient for the needs of, for example, palaeodemography or forensic practice. Unlike other age indicators, an indicator on which age changes over the life span can be assessed is acellular tooth cementum. A method using the counting of regular annual increments - cementochronology - offers its potential for estimating the age and season-of-death of adult individuals. However, the method is still not used in routine bioarchaeological or forensic practice. The existence of the first standardized unified protocol for sample preparation, the acquisition of a high quality microCT record (removing the destructiveness of the method), or the reducing of subjectivity in increment readings using automated tools are steps by which developments in the field of cementochronology hold the promise of its more frequent use also in practice, as it offers its often...
