Towards the Critical Edition of the Prologue Lives of SS. Constantine-Cyril and Methodius

Abstract

The dissertation is situated within the field of Slavic Philology and aims to contribute to the critical edition of three short Church-Slavonic hagiographical texts dedicated to Saints Constantine-Cyril and Methodius, whose manuscript traditions have never been systematically reconstructed or analyzed. The texts are transmitted in various redactions of the Prologue, the Church-Slavonic version of the Greek Synaxarion, and are conventionally designated as the Prologue Life of SS. Constantine-Cyril and Methodius, the Prologue Life of St. Constantine-Cyril, and the Prologue Life of St. Methodius. Although these compositions represent abridged versions of the ninth-century Vita Constantini and Vita Methodii, they have been largely neglected by scholarship, despite preserving, in some cases, readings that diverge from their primary sources. The study approaches the three hagiographies not primarily as historical sources for the Cyrillo-Methodian mission, but as textual evidence for the formation and development of the cult of the "Apostles of the Slavs" between the tenth and fourteenth centuries within the Church-Slavonic literary tradition. Disertace je zasazena do oblasti slovanské filologie a jejím cílem je přispět ke kritickému vydání tří krátkých církevněslovanských hagiografických textů věnovaných svatým Konstantinovi-Cyrilovi a Metodějovi, jejichž rukopisná tradice dosud nebyla systematicky rekonstruována ani analyzována. Tyto texty jsou dochovány v různých redakcích Prologu, církevněslovanské verze řeckého synaxáře, a jsou konvenčně označovány jako Proložní legenda o sv. Konstantinovi-Cyrilovi a Metodějovi, Proložní legenda o sv. Konstantinovi-Cyrilovi a Proložní legenda o sv. Metodějovi. Přestože tyto skladby představují zkrácené verze Vita Constantini a Vita Methodii z 9. století, zůstávaly v bádání do značné míry opomíjeny, a to navzdory skutečnosti, že v některých případech zachovávají čtení odlišná od svých hlavních pramenů. Studie nepřistupuje k těmto třem hagiografiím primárně jako k historickým pramenům pro rekonstrukci cyrilometodějské misie, nýbrž jako k textovým dokladům formování a vývoje kultu "apoštolů Slovanů" mezi 10. a 14. stoletím v rámci církevněslovanské literární tradice. Ačkoli se tyto texty dostaly do odborného diskurzu již na počátku 19. století a byly vydány A. P.
