Unfinished grammaticalisation in the history of English: processes and principles

Abstract

Tato disertační práce přispívá k širšímu výzkumu gramatikalizace zaměřením na dosud málo prozkoumaný jev - perzistentní incipientní gramatikalizaci (PIG) (Mair, 2010; Nykiel, 2018). Tento jev se vyznačuje dlouhou životností jazykových jednotek, která je v rozporu s jejich nízkou frekvencí a stupněm gramatikalizace. Tato kritéria dobře splňuje kategorie komplexních předložek a spojek v angličtině, jak zmiňuje Nykiel (2018). V jazyce často přetrvávají velmi dlouho, avšak zachovávají si svou frázovou podobu a značnou část svého lexikálního významu. Tato disertační práce je založena na šesti případových studiích komplexních předložek a spojek typu P + NP + of/that/to, příčemž zvláštní pozornost je věnována období pozdní střední angličtiny a raně moderní angličtiny. Konkrétně se jedná o předložkové a spojkové funkce následujících předložkových frází: to the intent, in (the) hope(s), with desire, by reason, by occasion a for default. Metodologie kombinuje kvalitativní a kvantitativní přístup, přičemž se obzvlášť zaměřuje na následující faktory: frekvenci, životnost, stupeň gramatikalizace, žánrovou distribuci a jazykový kontakt. This dissertation contributes to the wider study of grammaticalisation by focusing on a so far understudied phenomenon - persistent incipient grammaticalisation (PIG) (Mair, 2010; Nykiel, 2018). This phenomenon is characterized by the long life span of the items which is at odds with their low frequency and low degree of grammaticalisation. A category of grammatical items that fulfil these criteria well are complex prepositions and subordinators in English, as has been suggested by Nykiel (2018). They can have fairly long life-spans, but they retain their phrasal form and much of their lexical meaning. This dissertation was built around six case studies on the P + NP + of/that/to type of complex subordinators and prepositions, with a particular focus on the late ME and EModE periods. Specifically, these were the prepositional and subordinator functions of the following prepositional phrases: to the intent, in (the) hope(s), with desire, by reason, by occasion, and for default. The methodology combined a qualitative and quantitative approach, focusing specifically on the following factors: frequency, life span, degree of grammaticalisation, genre distribution, and language contact.
